At East Dene Primary, reading plays a central role in developing children’s cultural capital. Through the careful selection of books,
children are exposed to a variety of diverse texts which explore a range of different cultures, traditions, viewpoints and themes.
Exploration of these texts develop pupils’ background knowledge of not only their own communities and experiences but the experiences of others, enabling children to develop a sense of empathy for a wide range of people. By fostering a love of reading through our curriculum and reading challenges, we equip all pupils with the vocabulary, knowledge and cultural awareness they need to become informed, confident and successful future citizens.
