History

Introduction to History

The overarching aim of this history curriculum is to inspire pupils’ curiosity and interest in the past and help them develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It aims to enable pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.

By the end of primary school, the expectations are that all pupils will have developed curiosity about the past, chronological understanding, use of historical vocabulary, ability to reach reasoned conclusions, and an appreciation of how the past has shaped the present. The curriculum establishes end points for Year 6 while allowing flexibility across year groups to suit mixed age classes, with emphasis on depth over simply covering content.
